Omni-Directional Treatment by a Specialized Elderly Care Team

Specializing in adult and senile diseases, Seoul National university Bundang Hospital is operating a medical center for the elderly and a ward specializing in elderly care.

Elderly patients who usually have 4~5 kinds of chronic diseases and degenerative diseases simultaneously should be diagnosed and treated by collaborating specialists from many clinical departments in many cases.

For elderly patients suffering from composite problems, a team dedicated to geriatric medical services consisting of specialists from the Department of Internal Medicine, neurology department, neuropsychiatry department and rehabilitation medicine department and nurses specializing in elderly care, pharmacists, social welfare workers, and physical therapists is performing differentiated diagnoses and treatments suitable for the characteristics and situations of individual patients.

Comprehensive geriatric assessment

This center developed comprehensive assessment tools including items such as physical functions like visual acuity, auditory acuity, etc., nutrition states, cognitive functions, depression, evaluation of daily life ability, risk of fall and social support, etc.. Aside from elderly patients visiting outpatient clinics, those who are hospitalized are continuously assessed, and the results are being reflected on treatments.

Operation of ward specializing in elderly care

A ward specializing in elderly care is being operated wherein treatment policies are determined by a medical service team specializing in elderly care and consisting of doctors from the geriatrics medicine department, Department of Internal Medicine for heart, neurology department, neuropsychiatry department, rehabilitation medicine department, and urology department and nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, and social welfare workers through periodic meetings.

He graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1980. He had training in Internal Medicine in the Deaprtment of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University Hosptial. He had subspecialty training of Carrdiology in the same institition. He became the lecturer of Department of Internal Medicne, Seoul National University College of Medicine qn 1991 and is the Professor. In 1992, he was the research associate in the Cardiovascular Research of the Mayo Foundation, Rochester, MN. He observed the geriatric medicine in the Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital in 1999. His main interest is the hypertension, cardiovascular diseases in the elderly. He is now the academic director of Korean Society of Hypertension.

Kim graduated from Seoul National Univ. College of Medicine and completed his residency at the Dept. of Internal Medicine. He is currently doing research and engaging in clinical practice with interest in geriatric cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmia) and geromarasmus as well as the drug use of geriatric patients. He is a member of Korean Geriatrics Society, Korean Society of Hypertension, and Korean Society of Cardiology.

Kim graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine in 2006 and completed his residency at the Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital. He treat older patients in Geriatric Center, and his main interest is the frailty in the elderly. He also focus on the longevity and the improvements of health care in the elderly.

Professor Jang has an interest in clinical epidemiologic studies on prediabetes, gestational diabetes, and elderly diabetes. Recently, he presented the role of visceral obesity and adipokine on the development of diabetes in previous GDM. Professor Jang and his colleagues are performing community-based studies focusing on diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and sarcopenic obesity in Seongnam-si (KLoSHA).

Soo Lim, MD is Associate Professor, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. After obtaining his medical degree at Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea, Dr. Lim completed an internship, residency, and fellowship at the same institution. He obtained the degree of Master of Public Health at Seoul National University School of Public Health. He also received a doctorate in Medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine. He worked as a research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA in 2011-2012. Dr. Lim’s research interests focus on biology and pathophysiology related with diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. He has published more than 200 scientific journals in these fields. He is an expert in managing patients with diabetes mellitus and also a well-known lecturer in many Asian countries.

Dr. Lim specializes in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, including sports medicine, geriatrics, and interventional psychiatry. The objective of his current research is to investigate the key mechanisms of functional restoration and adaptation after injury, chronic diseases, or aging in humans. Especially, Dr. Lim is interested in the biochemical and physiological changes that occur during the aging process. His main experimental research interest is muscle physiology, particularly the age-related changes in muscle elasticity, plasticity, and apoptosis. His laboratory is fully equipped for DNA and protein analysis and for muscle mechanics to delineate the characteristics of these molecules. His clinical interest is moving towards the impact of chronic dysfunctions on the quality of life in elders and cancer survivors.

Assistant Professor, Department of Neuropsychiatry, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital

Dr. Han’s major field of practice and research is geriatric neuropsychiatry, focusing on Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive disorders. She also has a strong interest in characterizing mild cognitive impairment and the risk of progression to dementia. She is currently operating the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia (KLOSCAD, Principal Investigator: Pf. Ki Woong Kim), a nationwide multicenter cohort study involving about 7,500 randomly sampled, community-dwelling Korean subjects aged 60 years or older. She is currently investigating various biomarkers predicting progression to dementia, and developing cognitive training programs for mild-cognitive-impairment or early-dementia patients for the prevention of disease onset or progression. She is running specialized clinics for mild cognitive impairment, for behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia (BPSD), and for early-onset dementia in SNUBH (Department of Neuropsychiatry, Center for Dementia and Other Cognitive Disorders (CeDOCoD) in BCNI, Geriatric Medical Center).
