He was the very first to perform laparoscopic gastrectomy in Korea in 1996 and the first in the world to accomplish 500 cases of laparoscopic gastrectomy in 2006. Thanks to his skills and reputation, cases of laparoscopic gastrectomy steadily increased in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, finally reaching 3000 cases in 2014. Compared with other domestic and foreign hospitals, complication rate is lower and survival rate is higher in gastric cancer patients.

Ju-young Kim completed five years of residency and the fellowship course of Family Medicine at Seoul National University Hospital. In 2007, she completed a Ph.D. course in preventive medicine from the College of Medicine of Seoul National University. Professor Moon’s major fields of expertise are thyroid tumor/cancer and thyroid dysfunction. His research interests focus on the metabolic, neuropsychiatric, and growth effects of the thyroid hormone and nuclear receptors. He is currently conducting clinical and basic researches on the metabolic or neurocognitive effects of thyroid dysfunction, and is working on the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer, the prediction of the prognosis of thyroid cancer, and strategies for the diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

Specializing in anesthesia and pain medicine, Dr. Nahm graduated from SNU College of Medicine and did his residency in pain management at SNU Bundang Hospital. He has been doing research on neuropathic pain, including complex regional pain syndrome and postherpetic neuralgia. Furthermore, he is actively engaged in a basic research using animal models with complex regional pain syndrome.

Professor Sung Kyu Hong specializes in various urological cancers, including prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and bladder cancer. He performs various uro-oncological surgeries, including robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and other minimal invasive procedures. He has completed visiting investigatorship at Sidney Kimmel Center for Prostate and Urologic Cancers, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, NY, NY, USA. Having spent many years in USA, Professor Hong, fluent in English, is certainly capable of meeting the needs of international patients. He is very much interested in prostate cancer and has authored more than 100 articles published in international peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is currently serving as an editorial board member of Case Report in Urology and an associate editor of Korean Journal of Urology. Professor Hong also has been a part of several large-scale, international clinical trials on the management of urological cancers. Performing various endoscopic surgeries, he also manages other benign prostatic diseases, such as BPH and prostatitis.

Prof. Kim, a director in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, is an active clinician and surgeon in the management of gynecologic-cancer patients. He also actively performs minimally invasive surgeries, especially laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. Prof. Kim’s research group is currently working on programs for improving the treatment of gynecologic-cancer patients. He has two major research areas. The first is directed at clinical trials for the development of novel clinical strategies, in collaboration with KGOG and GOG. The second is focused on the study of translational research to identify the mechanism of platinum resistance, whose overall goal is to develop a pharmacologically driven agent for overcoming platinum resistance in ovarian-cancer patients.

The speicialty of professor Kim includes liver cancer, end stage liver disease, viral hepatitis and fatty liver disease. Professor Kim worked at UC Davis medical center as a visiting professor (2005-2006) on the methylation of eukaryotic promoter induced by short hairpin RNAs. Currently Dr. Kim's research focuses on the mechanisms of hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication, epigenetic regulation of HBV gene expression and novel therapeutic strategies against hepatocellular carcinoma.

Professor Kim, an enthusiastic neurosurgeon, is eager to find a new therapy for brain tumor, especially malignant brain tumors. He conducted and continues basic researches on the effects of anticancer agents on a mouse brain tumor model, and clinical researches involving prospective studies improving the treatment results of the multidisciplinary team approach for malignant gliomas. He also participates in and leads the domestic and international clinical trials verifying the significance of the recently developed treatment protocols in high-grade gliomas.

Professor Hyun, an enthusiastic spine surgeon, is a representative spinal-deformity surgeon in South Korea. He majored as a fellow in spinal deformity at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, USA, and has conducted many researches about modern techniques for spinal deformity surgeries, genetic study for lumbar spinal stenosis, and robotic spinal surgery. His major clinical fields are spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis, congenital deformity, postoperative/degenerative flatback deformity). Professor Han has been pioneers in laparoscopic surgery of hepato-biliary and pancreas surgery. His world-first reports were laparoscopic hepaticojejunostomy in 2004, laparoscopic treatment of intrahepatic bile duct stone in 2004, laparoscopic right posterior sectionectomy in 2006, laparoscopic central bisectionectomy in 2011. His nationwide first reports were laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy in 2010 and laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreas tumor in 2005. He succeeded laparoscopic donor right hemihepatectomy in 2010 as world first. He performed series of laparoscopic anatomical resection of liver as world wide first reports, such as, monosegmentecomy of S2, S4, S5, S7. and then S1, S6, and S8 resection. He educate hundreds of surgeon on the standard of minimal invasive surgery of hepato-biliary and pancreas area.

Dr. Kim is a staff member in the Department of Surgery at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and is actively executing his clinical practice as a colorectal surgeon. His areas of interest include all aspects of colorectal cancer and polyps, laparoscopic and robotic surgery for colorectal cancer, recurrent colorectal cancer, molecular biology of colorectal cancer, hereditary colorectal tumors, inflammatory bowel disease, functional colorectal and anal problems, and anal infectious diseases.
He is currently a member of Korean Hereditary Polyposis Registry and Cancer Institute at Seoul National University and has focused on basic research on hereditary colorectal tumor and on the biology of colorectal cancer. Dr. Kim is actively involved in many scientific and medical societies, including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the International Society for Gastrointestinal Hereditary Tumors.

Dr. Ahn’s main clinical interest is minimal invasive surgical treatment of gastric cancer, morbid obesity, sarcoma and hernia. He performed the world-first pure single port distal and total gastrectomy for gastric cancer and have the largest number of cases of single port gastrectomy in the world. And also he performed various kinds of single port laparoscopic surgery, which just leaves 2~2.5cm invisible transumbilical incision and show better postoperative recovery and causes less postoperativce pain. His another main interest is surgery for difficult cases of hernia, which is recurrent or failed in the other clinic.

Dr. Lee’s research group investigates molecular imaging and clinical positron emission tomography (PET). The main tools are small-animal imaging system (SPECT-CT) and the state-of-the-art clinical PET-CT system. The assessment of the delivery of the newest drugs to the specific targets in small animals is the major focus of the group. The candidate new drugs are small-interfering RNA, micro-RNA, radiopharmaceuticals, and others. The correlation of the histopathologic findings of the patients’ samples and the PET findings is another main research focus. The expressions of glucose transporters and hexokinase in the tumor tissues are examined using immunohistochemistry.

She became a visiting scientist at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and a visiting professor at Harvard Medical School, where she conducted research on novel breast kinases. She is the leader in the area of geriatric oncology in South Korea and is currently conducting a nationwide cohort study for the prediction of the survival and chemotherapy toxicity for older cancer patients.

Professor Jheon graduated Kyungpook National University School of Medicine (Daegu, Korea) in 1984, receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1994. After finishing residency and his military obligations as a medical officer of the Korean Army, he started his professional carrier in 1994. Currently he is chair professor of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, College of Medicine, Seoul National University which administers the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery of 3 affiliated hospitals of Seoul National University College of Medicine: Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and Seoul Metropolitan Government Borame Hospital. He is also an adjunct professor at the Department of Surgery, Tokyo Medical University, Japan and New Journey Cancer Hospital in Beijing, China.

He has mainly worked at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) since 2003 and currently he is also serving as Chief Financial and Strategy Officer.

He is engaged in a multitude of domestic and international medical societies, and serves as on the editorial board of many medical journals. He is a member of the Academy of Medicine of Korea. He is one the only two thoracic surgeons who are members of this prestigious academy.

He initiated multicenter studies in Korea and has exerted a huge impact on young thoracic surgeons through collaborative studies. He is also one of very few thoracic surgeons who have his own research laboratories. He is administering a variety of studies in different fields of basic research, in addition to his significant clinical achievements and provides research opportunities for young thoracic surgeons, regardless of their institution.

He is founder of Asia Thoracoscopic Surgery Education Program (ATEP) which is known as a representative education program of thoracoscopic surgery in Asia. He also organized the Korean Thoracoscopic Surgery Study Group and published the ‘Video Atlas of Thoracoscopic Surgery’. He is also one of 4 founding members of the Asia Thoracic Surgical Club (ATSC) which was established in 2001.

Not only does he publish many scientific papers in major journals, he is invited to lecture around the world. He designed the Global Medical Academy in SNUBH and has been inviting a series of board-certified doctors (numbering over 250) from the city of Moscow for 2-week education courses. By this initiative the SNUBH Global Medical Academy has begun to expand its capacity to other countries. He is an open minded and creative surgeon, ready to welcome innovation. Chief, Lung Center, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital

Prof. Kim has been a pioneer in VATS (video-assisted thoracic surgery) and is a well-known thoracic surgeon worldwide. He established VATS lobectomy for lung cancer and the VATS Ivor Lewis operation for esophageal cancer. He reported having performed the largest number of VATS lobectomy procedures in South Korea. He is presently the chief of the Respiratory Center and is in charge of the lung transplantation program in our hospital. He was the chief organizer of the VATS Center for Excellence Education Program for Asian thoracic surgeons. He and Dr. Jheon co-published the educational DVD “Video Atlas of VATS” for trainees. Also, he has conducted several demonstrations of live surgery (VATS lobectomy) in Asian countries and has contributed greatly to the improvement of the VATS technique and to promoting it among Asian surgeons. In the area of animal research, his group is experimenting on a new preservation solution of lung transplantation to reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury.
