Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
in the Department of Internal Medicine

Introduction to the Department

Seoul National University Bundang Hospital’s Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine focuses on a special area of internal medicine that deals with respiratory diseases. We provide world-class, quality care with state-of the-art medical devices and specialized staffs.

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine deals with the following diseases

1. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma
2. Lung cancer, solitary pulmonary nodule, ground-glass opacity (GGO)
3. Pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis
4. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis
5. Pulmonary artery hypertension, pulmonary thromboembolism
6. Pleural effusion, pleural tumor
7. Sleep apnea, snoring
8. Intensive care, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine performs the following procedures

1. Low-dose chest CT
2. Sleeping bronchial endoscopy (bronchoscopy)
3. Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
4. Interventional bronchoscopy: stenting, ballooning, electrocautery, laser, and cryotherapy
5. Autofluorescent endoscope, photodynamic therapy: early lung cancer detection and treatment
6. Endobronchial valve therapy: emphysema reduction in COPD patients
7. Polysomnography and positive airway pressure (PAP) titration: patients with sleep disordered breathing
8. Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy: patients in the Intensive Care Unit

Respiratory Center

We have organized a cooperation network with the Division of Allergy and the Department of Thoracic Surgery in the Respiratory Center.

Lee, Choon-Taek | M.D.
Specialty : Lung cancer, GGO nodule, Gene therapy. Immunotherapy. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Dr. Lee’s main clinical interest is lung cancer. His clinical research focuses on the early detection of lung cancer with low-dose CT and autofluorescent bronchoscopy. The natural-history elucidation and genetic analyses of ground-glass opacity nodules were his recent academic achievements. Dr. Lee’s translational research group also focuses on adenoviral gene therapy for lung cancer. His recent topics are combination of oncolytic adenovirus and E1-deleted adenovirus and immune checkpoint immunotherapy.

Lee, Jae-Ho | M.D.
Specialty : Tuberculosis, Non-tuberculous mycobacterium, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, Chronic obstructve pulmonary disease

Dr. Lee’s main clinical interest is chronic respiratory infection, especially tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterial disease. His research group also focuses on tuberculosis, especially on the effect of nutrition on the development and severity of tuberculosis, and the pharmacokinetics of anti-tuberculosis drugs. These include researches on the relationship between nutritional parameters like body mass index, serum albumin level, cholesterol, and vitamin D, and the development of tuberculosis. Dr. Lee and his colleagues also participate in the rapid detection and diagnosis of tuberculosis. These include proteomics using the profiling of specific serum proteins, and molecular diagnostic methods like the nucleic-acid amplification technique.

Yoon, Ho-Il | M.D.
Specialty : asthma COPD, bronchitis, bronhiectasis, lower respiratory tract infection

Chronic airway diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and bronchiectasis have always been Dr. Yoon’s major fields of interest. His interest in the impact of various environmental stimuli on bronchial inflammation enabled him to receive a Ph.D. degree in Preventive Medicine at Seoul National University. He is engaged in multiple clinical-research projects to better understand the natural history and prognosis of chronic airway diseases.

Cho, Young-Jae | M.D.
Specialty : ARDS and ECMO , Severe Pneumonia with Sepsis , Advanced Mechanical ventilator care , Percutaneous Dilatational Tracheostomy, Lung Ultrasound

A pulmonologist, Dr. Cho’s main clinical interest is critical care medicine. His clinical research is focused on how to manage acute respiratory distress syndrome and hospital-acquired infection in the Intensive Care Unit. He introduced and well organized an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation system for severe respiratory failure and co-worked with a lung and/or heart transplantation team for proper perioperative ICU care. His translational research group also focuses on acute lung injury, especially ventilator-induced lung injury with the molecular imaging system and pulmonary function testing system for small animals. He graduated from SNU College of Medicine and SNU Graduate School of Public Health. At present, he actively practices and conducts research in the fields of critical care medicine and interventional bronchoscopy.

Park, Jong-Sun | M.D.
Specialty : interstitial lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, tuberculosis, pneumonia, chronic respiratory disease

Dr. Park’s primary interest is the management of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and other interstitial lung disease, including how best to diagnose and treat interstitial lung disease and how the condition impacts the quality of life and survival of a patient. At present, she participates in global clinical trials for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis as the principal investigator. In addition, she actively practices and conducts research on tuberculosis, lung cancer, and bronchoscopy.
