Neurosurgery Department

Introduction to the Department

The Neurosurgery Department has established a collaborative medical service system with other clinical departments, such as the Neurology Department, Rehabilitation Department, Radiology Department, and Ophthalmology Department, to provide not only general medical services but also systematic and specialized medical services.

This department provides highly specialized medical services centering on brain diseases such as brain tumor as well as cerebrovascular diseases and spinal diseases. It is equipped with state-of-the-art medical service equipment, including expensive equipment for cerebrovascular intervention surgeries, brain and spine endoscope devices, laser equipment, microscope equipment, stereotactic devices, and brain disease navigation equipment.

Treatments & Services

  • Spinal diseases
    Disc hernia, various kinds of spine (spinal cord) diseases (tumor, infection, artery/vein malformation, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, trauma, and spinal deformities such as scoliosis or kyphosis)

  • Vascular diseases afflicting the nervous system
    Ischemic stroke (acute cerebrovascular occlusion, carotid stenosis, chronic cerebrovascular stenosis), hemorrhagic stroke (subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, intraventricular hemorrhage), cerebral aneurysm, dissection of the cerebral arteries, cerebral artery/vein malformation, moyamoya disease, carotid cavernous fistula, dural arteriovenous fistula
    Our Neurovascular Surgery Team always uses MEP (motor evoked potential) and SSEP (somatosensory evoked potential) for intraoperative monitoring so that we could minimize the neurological complications that may occur after the surgery. The major strength of our Neurovascular Surgery Team is its outstanding operation score in bypass surgery, which requires a high surgical level, especially for moyamoya disease, acute or chronic cerebral infarction, giant aneurysm, and cerebral arterial stenosis. Minimally invasive aneurysm surgery using endoscope is an additional merit of our Neurovascular Surgery Team. Our Endovascular Neurosurgery Team is also by far the best of all. Every year, several foreign doctors request training from our Endovascular Neurosurgery Team.

  • Brain tumor diseases
    All kinds of brain tumors, including gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary tumors, schwannomas, and metastatic brain tumors, are well treated by the Neuro-Oncology Team of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. The Neuro-Oncology Team consists of the professors of the Department of Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine, and is a multi-disciplinary team. Moreover, there are two specialized centers for brain tumors: Gamma Knife Center and Endoscopic Brain Surgery Clinic. Many brain tumors as well as cerebrovascular diseases such as cerebral arteriovenous malformations and cavernous hemangiomas are good indications of gamma knife radiosurgery. Endoscopic brain surgery may be a minimally invasive surgery for sellar tumors, including pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, and meningiomas.

Kim, Hyun-Jib | M.D.

Professor Kim is the founder of Spinal Center at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. He laid the foundation for spinal neurosurgery and took clinical interest in spinal cord tumor surgery, spinal arteriovenous malformation, ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament, syringomyelia, diverse lesions such as atlanto-occipital dislocation, atlanto-axial subluxation, and tumorous conditions occurring at the craniocervical junction. His research interests are spinal cord injury, intramedullary spinal cord tumor, dynamic stabilization of the spine.

Oh, Chang-Wan | M.D.
Specialty : Surgery for cerebral aneurysm, moyamoya disease & cerebral vascular malformation. Gamma-Knife for cerebral vascular malformation

Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery, Seoul National University College of Medicine Director, Bundang Clinical Neuroscience Center.

He is a chief professor of the cerebrovascular section and has served as the head of neurosurgery at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) from 2006 to 2014. He has been in charge of Bundang Clinical Neuroscience Institutue (BCNI) since 2014, and has served as a chairman of neurosurgery department in Seoul National University (SNU) College of Medicine from 2014.
His clinical practice includes all modes of cerebrovascular surgeries, and his major clinical interest is surgery for cerebral ischemic disease, such as moyamoya or atherosclerotic disease. He also performs Gamma-Knife surgery for cerebral vascular malformation.

Kwon, O-Ki | M.D.

Professor Kwon is the director of department of neurosurgery in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) and in charge of endovascular neurosurgery in SNUBH. He is exclusively clinically dedicated to the neuroendovascular field. He covers all neuroendovascular procedures, including aneurysm, vascular malformations, fistulas, extra and intracranial stenosis, vascular tumor, and spinal vascular diseases. His major basic research interests are the study on hemodynamics and the development of endovascular devices.

Jhang, Tae-Ahn | M.D.

Professor Jahng completed his residency at Presbyterian Medical Center and served as attending faculty at Wonkwang University Hospital from 1992 to 2000. He majored spinal surgery as a clinical fellow at Stanford University Medical Center and joined the faculty of Seoul National University in 2003. Although he is open to the study of all spinal diseases, his major concerns are compressive myelopathic diseases in the cervical and thoracic spine, minimally invasive spinal surgery, and non-fusion stabilization. The development of the bone fusion method, disc regeneration, and finite element analysis are his research interests.

Kim, Ki-Jeong | M.D.






Professor Kim majored spinal surgery as a clinical fellow at Seoul National University Hospital. He studied spinal surgery and disc biology as a fellow at Pittsburgh University Medical Center. His major interests are Syringomyelia/CSF dynamics, Cerebral palsy related spascticity, Degenerative spinal disease (minimally invasive spinal surgery), first and second cervical vertebrae disease (instability, tumor), tumor disease/injury in the vertebrae and spinal cord, infectious spinal disease, spinal cord arteriovenous malformations.

Kim, Chae-Yong | M.D.
Specialty : Brain tumor surgery, Pediatric brain tumor surgery, Neuro-oncology, Gamma knife radiosurgery, Skull base tumor surgery

Professor Kim, an enthusiastic neurosurgeon, is eager to find a new therapy for brain tumor, especially malignant brain tumors. He conducted and continues basic researches on the effects of anticancer agents on a mouse brain tumor model, and clinical researches involving prospective studies improving the treatment results of the multidisciplinary team approach for malignant gliomas. He also participates in and leads the domestic and international clinical trials verifying the significance of the recently developed treatment protocols in high-grade gliomas.
Bang, Jae-Seung

Bang, Jae-Seung | M.D.
Specialty : vascular neurosurgery (cerebral aneurysm, AVM, cavernous malformation, bypass surgery, Moyamoya disease, stroke)

Professor Bang is especially interested in minimally invasive aneurysm surgery, difficult bypass surgery, high-flow bypass surgery, and bypass to posterior circulation. His research interests are hereditary moyamoya disease, cerebrovascular ischemia, and pathogenesis of aneurysm. He is also interested in neurointensive care and is thus in charge of the Neurocritical Care Unit of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. He also participates in and leads the clinical trials of cerebrovascular surgical outcome and efficacy of hypothermia treatment in cerebral ischemia.

Han, Jung-Ho | M.D.

Professor Han completed his fellowship at Seoul National University Hospital. He is an active neurological surgeon who is interested in radiosurgery and functional neurosurgery. He has also conducted many researches about radiosurgery, neuro-oncology, and functional neurosurgery, and actively endeavors to identify the clinical factors for surgical outcome in patients with idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus and to evaluate the possibility of surgical treatment in managing patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

   Hyun, Seung-Jae | M.D.

   Specialty : Spinal deformity (pediatric/adult scoliosis/kyphosis)

Professor Hyun, an enthusiastic spine surgeon, is a representative spinal-deformity surgeon in South Korea. He majored as a fellow in spinal deformity at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, USA, and has conducted many researches about modern techniques for spinal deformity surgeries, genetic study for lumbar spinal stenosis, and robotic spinal surgery. His major clinical fields are spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis, congenital deformity, postoperative/degenerative flatback deformity). He has treated both pediatric and adult spinal-deformity patients.
Jin Deok joo

Jin-Deok, Joo | M.D.



Professor Joo is a board certified neurosurgeon at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital who specializes in the treatment of brain tumors. He operates on brain tumors using modern techniques including endoscopic device. His clinical and research interests focus on improving patient outcomes following brain tumor surgery. He specializes in neuro-oncology. He treats conditions including glioblastoma, gliomas (low grade and high grade), metastatic brain tumors, and benign brain tumors located especially around sella turcica. His research focuses on identification of anti-tumor effect of novel agent for glioblastoma with Blood-Brain Barrier disruption.
Ban, Seung-Pil

Ban, Seung-Pil | M.D.
Specialty : neurointervention (cerebral aneurysm, vascular malformation, ischemic disease), neurotrauma

Professor Ban is a neurosurgeon specializing in endovascular neurosurgery. Cerebrovascular diseases have had multimodal treatment needs of late, because of their complexity. He is exclusively clinically dedicated to the neuroendovascular field. He covers all neuroendovascular procedures, including aneurysm, vascular malformations, fistulas, extra and intracranial stenosis, vascular tumor, and spinal vascular diseases. He has been conducting researches on cerebrovascular diseases, including cerebral aneurysms, acute ischemic strokes, and arteriovenous malformations.
