Introduction to the Department

Since its opening in 2003, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has been playing an exclusive role in women's healthcare. As of 2012, there are nine professors in the department, three for each of the three subdivisions of maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility, all showing excellence in patient care, education, and research.

Each of the department’s subdivisions has done its best to achieve the department’s goal: the lowest possible rate of cesarean section in maternal-fetal medicine, minimally invasive surgery with excellent prognosis in gynecologic oncology, and cryopreservation for fertility preservation in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The department is currently running two special clinics: an infertility clinic and a fetus malformation screening clinic. As a result of these efforts, 42,000 patients visited the department’s outpatient clinics in 2012, and 2,000 surgeries and 1,000 deliveries were performed in the same year.

Concerning the education for medical students, lectures and bedside teaching are provided for obstetrics, general gynecology, genetics in medicine, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, and infertility. The education for residents includes a variety of regular, year-round academic activities, such as Wednesday Seminar, Grand Round, OB Meeting, Oncology Meeting, Endocrinology Meeting, and Endocrinology Book Review.

Based on the department’s intensive clinical and basic research, the department’s publications have been gradually increasing every year. In 2012, a total of 46 articles were published in quality journals.

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine promptly identifies the factors that adversely affect lying-in women and fetuses, such as old age, twin pregnancy, diabetes, and early labor, and carries out management to minimize the complications in mothers and fetuses. The fetal-malformation screening clinic assesses fetuses’ congenital structural malformations and selects lying-in women for early delivery by measuring the length of the cervix uteri.

The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility provides total care to couples suffering from infertility, guidance for a healthy life after menopause, and consulting and treatment related to menstrual disorders in children, juveniles, or women of child-bearing age, such as abnormal menstruation, menstrual irregularity, amenorrhea, and anovulation. In line with the tradition of Seoul National University Hospital, which gave birth to the first test tube baby in South Korea, the infertility clinic boasts high pregnancy rates by using the newest superovulation induction method and the in-vitro fertilization method. It also endeavors to reduce the pain of infertile couples and helps plant the seed of life in them through infertility diagnosis, intrauterine insemination, in-vitro fertilization, etc. The department recently started concentrating on the fertility preservation of cancer patients to prevent fertility loss after cancer therapy. It includes the cryopreservation of oocytes, embryos, and ovarian tissue, and medical treatments for reducing the toxicity of cancer therapy.

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology screens women for the early diagnosis of gynecologic cancers such as cervical, uterine corpus, and ovarian cancer, by performing various kinds of special examinations. It also takes charge of the comprehensive and systematic treatments of patients with gynecologic cancers. Moreover, using the state-of-the-art surgery robot Da Vinci, which was introduced for the first time to the national universities, the department succeeded in performing total laparoscopic hysterectomy for the first time in South Korea.

The Menopause & Menstrual Irregularity Clinic provides consulting on healthy life after menopause as well as consulting and treatment related to menstrual disorders in children, juveniles, or women of child-bearing age, such as abnormal menstruation, menstrual irregularity, amenorrhea, and anovulation.

In line with the tradition of Seoul National University Hospital, which gave birth to the first test tube baby in South Korea, the Infertility Clinic boasts high pregnancy rates by using the newest superovulation induction method and the in-vitro fertilization method. It endeavors to reduce the pain of infertile couples and to help plant the seed of life in them through infertility diagnosis, intrauterine insemination, in-vitro fertilization, etc.

The Clinic for the Early Diagnosis of Gynecological Cancers diagnoses gynecological cancers such as cervical cancer, corpus carcinoma, and ovarian cancer by performing various kinds of special examinations, and takes charge of the comprehensive and systematic treatments of patients with gynecological cancers.

The High-Risk Pregnancy Clinic promptly identifies the factors that adversely affect lying-in women and fetuses, such as old age, twin pregnancy, diabetes, and early labor, and carries out management to minimize the complications in lying-in women and fetuses.

The Fetus Malformation Ultrasonic Diagnosis Clinic assesses fetuses’ congenital structural malformations and selects lying-in women for early delivery by measuring the length of the cervix uteri.

Moreover, using the state-of-the-art surgery robot Da Vinci, which was introduced for the first time to the national universities, the department succeeded in performing total laparoscopic hysterectomy for the first time in South Korea.

Doctors

Park, Kyo-Hoon | M.D.
Specialty :Preterm birth, Multiple pregnancy, Antenatal ultrasound for anomaly scan, Labor induction

Dr. Park is the prime example of a clinician scientist with a specific interest in clinical and translational research “from the bench to the patient,” as attested to by his CV. He conducted a number of studies on issues pertaining to the determinants of preterm labor, chorioamnionitis, and other complications of pregnancy and childbirth that already have a clinical impact in the current practice. Several of these publications, including many directed by Dr. Park himself, are already considered “classic papers” and are often cited in the field of maternal-fetal medicine. Dr. Park has definitive international expertise in ultrasound in pregnancy and in preterm birth, and from the outside, he is viewed as an up-and-coming force in investigative obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine in South Korea. Of note, he mentored students in several publications, and he and his students have received several awards in the field.
Dr. Park is unquestionably a promising maternal-fetal medicine specialist and a continuously active researcher, with several research papers published in prominent international journals, and with many of them written by students under his supervision.
