G Einstein, L Pilote, G De Vries, S Richardson, N Forger, M Perović, S Ahmed, G Bauer…
Biology of Sex Differences, 2026•Springer
For decades, researchers have largely studied aspects of sex and gender separately; the former as a basic science and the latter as a social construct with real world consequences, including health inequities. In recent years, as our collective understanding of how the biological and social intersect has advanced, the realization that sex and gender are interactional and deeply interwoven has deepened. It is not either sex or

The Extent Of Gender/Sex Variables Included In Clinical Algorithms Across Medical Specialties: The article examines gender/sex variable in clinical algorithms
SH Davis, AC Danielsen, IYF Hsiao, KK Albert, MK Delano, C Shachar, SS Richardson…
Health Affairs, 2026 Gender/sex variables are often included in clinical algorithms, typically without articulating which aspects of gender or sex-linked biologies are hypothesized to contribute to the tools’ output. To date, there exists little systematic evaluation of how gender/sex inputs are used in clinical algorithms. We analyzed all clinical algorithms available in the online database MDCalc, assessing whether and how they include gender/sex inputs. For tools with gender/sex inputs, we evaluated the consequences of, justification for, and timeline of

A Single-Cell Meta-Analysis Evidences Transposable Element Dysregulation in Sex-based Differences in Parkinson Disease. F Gordillo-Gonzalez, C Galiana-Rosello, R Grillo-Risco, I Soler-Saez, MR Hidalgo, H Siomi, M Kobayashi-Ishihara*, F Garcia-Garcia*. Neurobiology of Disease. 2026. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42669364/
o Summary: This research provides the first integrative meta-analysis of transposable element (TE) expression in Parkinson’s disease (PD) across four substantia nigra single-nucleus RNA-seq datasets from 66 donors. It reveals widespread TE activation across brain cell types, including increased L1s in neurons and HERVs in oligodendrocytes. Sex-specific TE signatures were identified, suggesting distinct regulatory mechanisms in males and females. TE-gene associations implicated pathways related to neuroinflammation and myelination, supporting TEs as potential sex-modulated contributors to PD pathology.
Integrated lipidome and miRNome analyses reveal sex-based differences in circulating extracellular vesicles of alcohol use disorder patients. C Perpiñá-Clérigues, S Mellado, C Galiana-Roselló, S Kodikara, B Martín-Urdiales, M Marcos, KA Lê Cao, F García-García* and M Pascual*. Cell Biology and Toxicology 2026. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10565-026-10213-z
o Summary: This study integrated miRNA and lipidomic profiling of plasma extracellular vesicles to identify molecular signatures of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in females and males. The combined multi-omic profile showed predictive potential for AUD diagnosis, outperforming individual biomarkers. Sex-specific signatures revealed distinct biological responses to alcohol, involving immunity, oxidative stress, and autophagy. These findings support multi-omics integration as a promising approach for developing personalized diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for AUD.
Single cell landscape of sex differences in the different courses of multiple sclerosis. I Soler-Saez, B Gomez-Cabañes, R Grillo-Risco, C Galiana-Rosello, L Barea-Moya, H Carceller, M de la Iglesia-Vaya, S Gil-Perotin, V Tepavcevic, MR Hidalgo*, F García-García*. Biology of Sex Differences 2026. https://doi.org/10.1186/s13293-026-00957-y
o Summary: This study investigated sex-associated differences in gut microbiota among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients across six independent cohorts comprising 337 samples. Eleven microbial taxa showed significant sex-related differences, with nine enriched in females and two in males. Female-enriched taxa, including Eggerthella and Eisenbergiella, were associated with specific MS subtypes and greater disability. The findings highlight the importance of considering biological sex in microbiome research to better understand MS heterogeneity and disease progression.
Myc sustains Regional and Sex-biased Organ Zonation in the Drosophila Intestine. C Amourda, L Blackie, P Gaspar, L Martin-Coll, AR Prasad, AH House, M Holopainen, H Ruhanen, N Lamichane, D Hadjieconomou, T Ameku, A Mineo, M Coxhead, I Soler-Sáez, C Galiana-Roselló , F García-Garcia, YF Wang, C Alexandre, A Bailey, AP Gould, V Hietakangas, R Käkelä, S Vernia*, I Miguel-Aliaga*. Developmental Cell 2026. https://www.cell.com/developmental-cell/fulltext/S1534-5807(26)00220-0
o Summary: This reseach used adult Drosophila intestines to investigate how gene expression and metabolism vary across intestinal regions and between sexes. Sex-specific zonation was driven by opposing actions of the sex determinant Dsx and the transcription factor Myc. In females, Myc increased enterocyte ploidy and regulated lipid metabolism, including region-specific triacylglycerol storage. Myc activity supported peripheral lipid reserves and reproductive capacity, highlighting the intestine’s role in sex differences in metabolism.
Multi-Omics Factor Analysis v2 (MOFA+) reveals specific co-variation patterns in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that are strongly influenced by obesity. E Géraud, MA Martínez-García, M Insenser, S Barceló-Cerdá, F García-García, M Luque-Ramírez, HF Escobar-Morreale*. Human Reproduction Open 2026. https://academic.oup.com/hropen/advance-article/doi/10.1093/hropen/hoag080/8788611
o Summary: Multi-Omics Factor Analysis v2 (MOFA+) suggested that PMOS was characterized by an androgen-driven metabolic reprogramming in which sexual dimorphism was reshaped in an obesity- and omics-specific manner, consisting of strong associations of proinflammatory proteins and adipokines with gut microbiota genera and metabolomics variables that were amplified by obesity.
