1. In March, the U.S. GAO recommended that the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration adopt strategies to protect “demographic groups” (women, the elderly, the obese, and children) currently at risk. This means that NHTSA should include 50th percentile female crash test dummies that correctly model the female body in automobile safety testing. See: https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-23-105595

3. Stanford University held a national Embedded EthiCS Conference, March 7. Gender issues can be embedded in the Computer Science curriculum as part of ethics. Recording and resources on: this page(https://hai.stanford.edu/embedded-ethics-resource-page).

4. Not Only WEIRD but “Uncanny”? A Systematic Review of Diversity in Human–Robot Interaction Research
K Seaborn, G Barbareschi, S Chandra - International Journal of Social …, 2023 – Springer Critical voices within and beyond the scientific community have pointed to a grave matter of concern regarding who is included in research and who is not. Subsequent investigations have revealed an extensive form of sampling bias across a broad range of disciplines that conduct human subjects research called “WEIRD”: Western, Educated, Industrial, Rich, and Democratic. Recent work has indicated that this pattern exists within human–computer interaction (HCI) research, as well. How then does human–robot interaction (HRI) fare? And …

5. Diversity Not Discussed: Centring Overlooked Factors of Inclusion within Human-Robot Interaction
K Seaborn
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have become major points of concern within human-robot interaction (HRI) and adjacent spaces. Efforts are being undertaken to
map out the state of affairs, explore solutions, and make progress within and beyond …

6. Sexual selection in females and the evolution of polyandry
https://journals.plos.org/Plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.3001916
S Fromonteil, L Marie-Orleach, L Winkler, T Janicke - Plos Biology, 2023 - journals.plos.org
Over the last decades, the field of sexual selection underwent a paradigm shift from sexual-stereotype thinking of “eager” males and “coy” females towards a more nuanced perspective acknowledging that not only males but also females can benefit from multiple mating and compete for mating partners. Yet, sexual selection in females is still considered a peculiarity, and the evolution of polyandry is often viewed to result from a higher mating interest of males. Here, we present meta-analytic evidence from 77 species across a broad range of …

7. Sexual dimorphism in the molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance during a critical developmental window in Wistar rats

Insulin resistance (IR) is a condition in which the response of organs to insulin is impaired. IR is an early marker of metabolic dysfunction. However, IR also appears in physiological contexts during critical developmental windows. The molecular mechanisms of physiological IR are largely unknown in both sexes. Sexual dimorphism in insulin sensitivity is observed since early stages of development. We propose that during periods of accelerated growth, such as around weaning, at postnatal day 20 (p20) in rats, the kinase S6K1 is overactivated …

8. Molecular insulin actions are sexually dimorphic in lipid metabolism

The increment in energy-dense food and low physical activity has contributed to the current obesity pandemic, which is more prevalent in women than in men. Insulin is an anabolic hormone that regulates the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins in adipose tissue, liver, and skeletal muscle. During obesity, nutrient storage capacity is dysregulated due to a reduced insulin action on its target organs, producing insulin resistance, an early marker of metabolic dysfunction. Insulin resistance in adipose tissue is central in metabolic …

9. For CS/STEM faculty interested in gender inclusion: Oregon State University now offers a free online course for anyone who wants to learn GenderMag (https://gendermag.org/).  You, a faculty member, might want to take it if you want to learn to DO GenderMag (to make your own course/outreach materials more inclusive), and/or if you want to learn to TEACH bits of GenderMag (to make your students’ creations and/or behavior more inclusive).  Or you might want to have your students or staff take Modules 1-2. It’s free, and they’ll get a certificate if they do (a nice decoration for their resumes).
