1.EU Expert Group report on the COVID-19 impact on gender equality in Research and Innovation! The report warns of further set-backs to gender equality in scientific careers if the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic remains unaddressed. You can also find a short news item and a factsheet here.

2.U.S. NIH ORWH E-Learning Courses on Sex as a Biological VariableThe NIH Policy on Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV) articulates NIH’s expectation that sex, as a biological variable, will be factored into research designs, analyses, and reporting in vertebrate animal and human studies. ORWH's e-learning courses give users a thorough and up-to-date understanding of sex and gender influences on health and disease and NIH requirements on factoring sex as a biological variable into research designs. Visit the ORWH E-Learning page to register. Completion of the free courses will give users the knowledge they need to design and conduct research or interpret evidence for clinical practice.

3. In collaboration with the NIH Sexual and Gender Minority Research Office (SGMRO), ORWH recently updated our sex and gender webpage: ‘What are Sex and Gender?’ and created a graphic illustrating influences of sex and gender in health and disease. We also re-launched our introductory course (video and downloadable slide deck) a few months ago: Introduction to Sex and Gender: Core Concepts for Health-Related Research that covers gender, SDOH, intersectionality, and other key topics in health research.

4. Improving access for and experience of transgender and non-binary patients in clinical research: Insights from a transgender patient focus group and targeted …. R Round, N Gokool, G Manica, L Paschall, S Foulcer - Contemporary Clinical Trials, 2023. Introduction The transgender and non-binary communities make up a significant, growing proportion of the population, but, to date, few clinical trials report including transgender and non-binary individuals. Methods As part of a mixed-method …

5. Feminist and queer science: Principles for research with gender, sex, and sexuality in psychology and beyond. SM van Anders, ZC Schudson, WJ Beischel… - Psychology of Sexual …, 2023. Feminist/queer science offers exciting possibilities for psychology and other fields. Inthis article, we review a set of dynamic principles for feminist/queer science, based in research with gender, sex, and sexuality (gender/sex/uality). There are potentially …

6. Sex and Gender as Critical and Distinct Contributors to the Human Brain-Gut-Microbiome AxisNN Gancz, JA Levinson, BL Callaghan - Brain Research Bulletin, 2023. The brain-gut-microbiome axis (BGMA) is a pivotal contributor to human health. Alarge body of research, especially from animal models, has revealed bidirectional, causal relationships between the BGMA and sex. In particular, sex steroids appear …

7. Addressing sex bias in biological databases worldwideV Ruiz-Serra, N Buslón, OR Philippe, D Saby… - 2023 – biohackrxiv.org. Precision medicine aims at tailoring treatments to individual patient needs. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies are viewed as revolutionary since they have the capacity to identify key features that link genomic and phenotypic traits at the individual level. AI techniques therefore depend on the quantity and quality of patient data. When variables like sex, age, or race are ignored in sample records, it can result in biased predictions as they will not be considered in the training of the AI algorithm. To this end, the …

8. Perceived Trustworthiness of Natural Language GeneratorsB Cabrero-Daniel, AS Cabrero - arXiv preprint arXiv:2305.18176, 2023. Natural Language Generation tools, such as chatbots that can generate human-like conversational text, are becoming more common both for personal and professional use. However, there are concerns about their trustworthiness and ethical implications …

9. Understanding Social Context from Smartphone Sensing: Generalization Across Countries and Daily Life MomentsAR Mader, L Meegahapola, D Gatica-Perez - arXiv preprint arXiv:2306.00919, 2023. Understanding and longitudinally tracking the social context of people help in understanding their behavior and mental well-being better. Hence, instead of burdensome questionnaires, some studies used passive smartphone sensors to …

10. Biases in Large Language Models: Origins, Inventory and DiscussionR Navigli, S Conia, B Ross - ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality, 2023. In this paper, we introduce and discuss the pervasive issue of bias in the large language models that are currently at the core of mainstream approaches to Natural Language Processing (NLP). We first introduce data selection bias, that is, the bias …

11. How Are Gender Norms Perceived?L Bursztyn, AW Cappelen, B Tungodden, A Voena… - 2023 – nber.org. … indicate how misperceptions of gender norms may obstruct progress toward gender equality, … We first discuss how gender norms vary across the world, before we discuss the extent to …

12. Sustainable Production and ConsumptionRO Sannou, S Kirschke, E Günther. Research and practice increasingly recognise the importance of measuring social sustainability in the agri-food sector to produce sustainable food for consumption. As a result, a diverse set of social sustainability indicators has been developed in

13. Gender-Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Tranformation (GREAT) partnered with CGIAR Excellence in Agronomy Initiative on a Delivering Gender- and Youth-Responsive Agronomic Solutions Custom Course, with more collaborations in the works. Meanwhile, the GREAT research community continues to contribute to the knowledge base in the gender and agriculture space. Recently, we published a special issue in the Journal of Sustainability covering four papers featuring work from the GREAT seed grants, research cluster and relevant Fellows' and mentors' work. From East Africa to West Africa, from mainstream to custom courses, and across various value chains, the papers tackle topics crucial to participatory plant breeding. And more research work is ongoing.

14. Measuring Stereotypes using Entity-Centric DataN Madani, R Bandyopadhyay, MM Yoder, K Joseph - arXiv preprint arXiv:2305.09548, 2023. Stereotypes inform how we present ourselves and others, and in turn how we behave. They are thus important to measure. Recent work has used projections of embeddings from Distributional Semantic Models (DSMs), such as BERT, to perform …
