Subject: [Gendered Innovations] Research of interest and a couple of announcements
From our Korean colleagues—then see more articles, etc., below the announcement.
We would like to invite you to the Bridging the Gap: Advancing Research Excellence Through Key Biological, Social, and Data-Driven Approaches webinar series, co-hosted by the Korea Center for Gendered Innovations in Science and Technology (GISTeR) and the Caucus for Women in Statistics and Data Science (CWS).

In this upcoming webinar, we will be joined by two international experts to bring together biological and social perspectives with data-driven approaches, offering an opportunity to consider how we can reduce bias in research and move toward more inclusive and responsible research practices.

  • Speakers:
  • Dr. Leslie McClure (Biostatistics, Saint Louis University): Dr. McClure’s methodological work is in the design and analysis of clinical trials with multiple outcomes and her collaborative work aims to understand health inequities, particularly racial and geographics, and the role that the environment plays in them.
    • Title: Are we measuring the same things the same way for everyone? Assessing Measurement Invariance in The Diabetes LEAD Network
  • Dr. Jiook Cha (Psychology, Seoul National University): Dr Cha’s research lies at the intersection of computational neuroscience, multimodal brain imaging, human genetics, and artificial intelligence, with the goal of precision, individual-level modeling of the human brain.
    • Title: Large Brain Model: An AI that understands the language of the brain

Climate, Gender, and Sexual and Reproductive Health-Intersectional Approaches and Evidence
R Dabash, S Nasir, S Dijkerman, WR Sheldon… - 2026
Climate change, gender, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are
intrinsically linked. The climate crisis disproportionately impacts women and girls
and magnifies social, economic, and cultural disparities in access to economic …
Sex-related osmotic adjustment strategies underpin desiccation tolerance in the intertidal seaweed Neoporphyra haitanensis
XUE Song, C Jun, X Jie, XIN Jiayi, W Hongzhen… - Plant Physiology and …, 2026

Desiccation stress constitutes a significant environmental challenge for macroalgae
inhabiting the intertidal zone, in which recurrent tidal cycles shape their
physiological tolerance. However, sex-related responses to desiccation in …

Ergonomic mismatch in circular staplers: powered staplers are associated with reduced sex-related disparities
E Kono, S Nomura, T Sakamoto, K Okoshi… - Minimally Invasive Therapy …, 2026

Background Manual circular staplers have been recognized as difficult to operate,
particularly for female surgeons. Recently, powered circular staplers have been
developed to address these limitations. This study aimed to describe surgeons’ …
Designing fairness: best practices for gender-sensitive development of cognitive ability tests in recruitment

Schneider, C Striebing, ME Jacobsen, K Pässler - Humanities and Social Sciences …, 2026

Psychological tests play a pivotal role in high-stakes decisions such as recruitment,
yet traditional development guidelines concentrate fairness work downstream—at
test administration and post hoc statistical bias correction—while offering little …
Integrating Sex and Gender into Transcriptomics of the Brain
MM McCarthy, A Raznahan - Sex and Gender: Understanding Entanglement …, 2026

The study of sex differences in the brain has been an active area since the 1970s
and has evolved in parallel with emerging technology, a prominent recent example
of which is transcriptomics. Biological processes arise from and are regulated by …
Sex-specific biological aging clocks across organs and omics
MULTI Consortium, Z Song, D Feng, NA Rahman… - Nature Medicine, 2026

Sex differentially shapes aging, neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative
diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, most biological aging clocks (artificial
intelligence-predicted age minus chronological age) were trained on sex-pooled …
