Subject: [Gendered Innovations] News and Research of Interest

I begin with amazing news from the University of Tokyo in Japan. Professor Yuko Fujigaki was selected as the president-elect of the University of Tokyo on September 28, 2026, becoming the institution's first female president in its nearly 150-year history. Her six-year term will begin April 1, 2027, and run through March 31, 2033. Congratulations to Professor Fujigaki and to all our Japanese colleagues!

IR Coe, A Webb
FACETS, 2026
Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are increasingly recognized as foundational to research excellence, yet many researchers in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE) remain uncertain about, or resistant to, integrating EDI principles into their work. In this Perspectives article, we examine
how discomfort, confusion, and active resistance to EDI arise within Canadian NSE research cultures shaped by historically narrow notions of merit, objectivity, and excellence. Drawing on scholarship in research culture, behaviour,
